Dogs and Fireworks
Nothing is more exciting than watching a beautiful display of fireworks
on a warm summer evening. Although it is tempting to take your dog
with you, dogs are often terrified of fireworks. Remember, you dog’s
hearing

is far better than yours. It is best to leave your dog safely at
home when you celebrate the summer. However, if you are camping
with your dog, or if you live close to where the fireworks display
is taking place, here are a few tips that can help ease your dog’s
fear. These tips are also useful if your dog is afraid of thunderstorms.
Reassure: Talk in a soft voice and give him a gentle
massage. Be careful not to go overboard or your dog may think that
acting scared gets attention, and he’ll continue with that behavior.
Let Him Hide: Many dogs feel safe in a special
“den”. Make sure your dog has access to his crate if he has one,
but leave the door open. If there is a spot that your dog likes
to hide, let him stay in his hiding spot and try to make it comfortable
for him. When the noise is over, he will come out on his own.
Play Music: There are many CD’s and tapes available
that are used for relaxation. You can quietly play ocean sounds,
babbling brook sounds, or even soft symphony music to drown out
some of the loud noise.
Keep him inside: Your dog could seriously injure
himself trying to escape. If your dog gets loose when he’s terrified,
he will wander aimlessly and end up lost and alone.
Be Brave: Make sure you keep calm when your dog
is upset. Dogs can sense when people are frightened or nervous,
and it will rub off on them. Don’t make a big deal out of storms
or loud noises.
Consult a Professional: A good behaviourist can
slowly condition your dog to loud noises. The usual method is to
start with small noises and condition the dog to accept them. Then
the noise is increased by a small amount. This method is called
desensitization. You should not try this on your own without the
help of a specialist.
